Painting used furniture
When we move into a new home, our existing used furniture may no longer fit in with our new décor. Who doesn’t have a chest of drawers, chairs, TV stand or bookshelves that are still solid but no longer up to date?
Colorantic chalk paint offers a host of possibilities, not least for refinishing outdated furniture, whether in melamine, plywood or solid wood.
Painting your furniture is a great way to give new life to your old furniture, while personalizing your interior design. So whether you’re looking to update an old chest of drawers or add a splash of color to your shelves, paint can instantly transform the look of any piece of furniture.
With a little patience and imagination, they can easily be brought up to date. It’s a lot cheaper than buying new furniture, and it’s in keeping with the times.
Youtube artist Jennyfer Galarneau and her partner built their very first home earlier this year, and had a few pieces of furniture to reupholster to match the new decor.
With this in mind, Jennyfer decided to give a second life to a piece of used TV furniture, a coffee table, a jug, a ladder and a picture frame.
Because once you start, it’s very hard to stop!
Here is the list of products used:
- Colorantic chalk paint: Cotton ball
- Colorantic chalk paint: Night
- Colorantic matte varnish
- Colorantic cleaner and varnish remover
Preparation
It’s essential to prepare your furniture and work environment properly before you start. Understand that if you don’t prepare your furniture for painting, the paint may flake off and you’ll have to start all over again.
First of all, protect your workspace by installing sheets or tarpaulins around your furniture to avoid staining the floor. When it comes to preparing furniture for a new coat of paint, there are a number of steps to take:
- Cleaning
- Drying
- Light sanding to scratch the surface (this allows the paint to adhere very well).
- Application of an oil- or water-based primer (this ensures very good adhesion to the paint). It guarantees a job that will last a very long time.
The finish
Colorantic offers you three choices of finishing products:
- Wax: Recommended for occasional furniture that doesn’t need to be cleaned with water.
- Matt varnish: This varnish contains around 10% gloss and is perfect for furniture requiring very frequent cleaning.
- Glaze: Translucent Window glaze contains approx. 35% gloss (satin). The glaze is excellent for kitchen cabinets and vanities. It cleans perfectly.
