Preparing Your Furniture Properly

Even though this step is surely the least interesting of the project, it is essential to follow all the recommended steps before starting to apply chalk paint to your furniture.

How to Prepare a Piece of Furniture with a Varnish-Free Finish

 

  • First remove the hardware if applicable.
  • Then, sand very lightly with the sanding block in the direction of the wood grain, only to scratch the surface.
  • Spray Cleaner and Varnish Remover on all surfaces. Leave to act depending on the degree of dirt. Once the time has elapsed, rinse well twice with a cloth to remove all residue.

How to Prepare Furniture with a Water-Based Finish

  • First, remove the hardware if applicable.
  • Then, spray the Cleaner and Varnish Remover. Leave the cleaner to act for 15 to 30 minutes. Once the time has elapsed, rinse well twice with a cloth to remove all residue. This step should have removed the shine from the furniture, repeat if necessary!
  • Sand very lightly with the sanding block in the direction of the wood grain, only to scratch the surface.
  • Apply Colorantic water-based primer, to properly prepare the surface for the application of the chalk paint.

How to Prepare Furniture with a Oil-Based Finish

  • First, remove the hardware if applicable.
  • Then, spray the Cleaner and Varnish Remover. Leave the cleaner to act for 15 to 30 minutes. Once the time has elapsed, rinse well twice with a cloth to remove all residue. This step should have removed the shine from the furniture, repeat if necessary!
  • Sand very lightly with the sanding block in the direction of the wood grain, only to scratch the surface.
  • It is strongly recommended to apply Colorantic oil-based primer, as you need to transition from the old oil finish to the new water-based chalk paint.
