Old boat oars are increasingly sought after as the current decor trend leans very much towards the “seaside” style. Seeing more and more of these oars in decorations, I really wanted to get one to decorate the main entrance to the house.
While browsing Marketplace, I was very lucky to come across someone who had an old oar to give away. I was even luckier to be the first person to arrive who was able to benefit from this incredible “deal”!
Already, I had exactly head of this what I was going to do with this find. Of course, I was going to paint it with the exceptional Colorantic chalk paint!
By reading the following, you will discover all the steps necessary to upgrade this old train into a magnificent decorative object. This project is one of the simplest to carry out, even the quickest. In total, it took me about three hours to complete this project.
The material used
- Colorantic Chalk Paint: Night
- Colorantic Black Charcoal Wax
- Pinceau Oval #10 Colorantic
- Round wax brush 16 mm Colorantic
- Masking tape Colorantic
- Stencil with letters
- Electric sandblaster and 100 grit sandpaper
The preparation
First, the important thing was to remove all the old varnish that remained on the oar. To do this, I used an electric sandblaster, and with 100 grit sandpaper, I removed the old varnish in no time. Naturally, I took care to dust the oar very well before continuing the work.
Then, I used green masking tape to outline the area I wanted to paint.
The painting
Using the #10 oval brush, II gave a first coat of paint to the Night color on the end of the oar. After the drying time of about 30 minutes, I was ready to apply the second coat.
Since Colorantic chalk paint is very opaque, two coats were enough to achieve the desired result.
With the stencil, I did the same exercise to write the last name of my husband and my boys. I would have liked to include my last name too, but Bourque-Ouellet is unfortunately a little too long, and according to my children, it sounds less “cool” than Pigeon!
Finishing
Finally, after waiting for everything to dry, using the round wax brush, I applied a light coat of Colorantic Charcoal Black wax. This is to give it an aged look.
A free ad on Marketplace, great Colorantic products and three hours later, I had a new decorative element to add to my decor!
In short, a project that can be done in no time, but which allows me to personalize my entry and which always earns me kind words from from my guests.
