Colorantic

Our chalk paint

Our chalk paint with chalky matte finish contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which means it contains no solvents that will be released into the atmosphere in gaseous form. Added colorants contain only trace amounts. Our chalk paint is non-toxic, lead-free and complies with Health Canada standards.

Colorantic™ requires little or no preparation depending on the project surface. We recommend a preparation product (such as Shellac) if your furniture dates from a previous era or has been in contact with smoke. Colorantic™ chalk paint has high coverage and dries quickly, so you can finish a project in no time.

Our chalk paints come only in plastic containers with a large opening, so you can use your brush directly. We like to offer ready-to-use products to facilitate the hectic lives of our new and experienced painters. Our containers are reusable and recyclable. Plastic lids can be screwed on. No more metal containers!

How to paint with chalk paint?

Chalk paint can be wonderful if applied correctly. We recommend light sanding to remove the sheen. Some oil-based varnishes can compromise the adhesion of our water-based paint, so we recommend using our Colorantic furniture spray cleaner and light sanding afterwards. There’s nothing miraculous about it; you just need to put in a minimum of effort if you want to achieve the desired results. Oil-based paint and varnish are never compatible with any water-based paint. However, if the gloss has been removed, you’re ready to paint!

Use chalk paint on fabric, plastic, metal, melamine and leather?

If you have these types of surfaces, you can still achieve the Vintage effect with our chalk-based paint. However, you’ll need an oil-based undercoat (commonly called a ‘primer’) to prepare the adhesion to your surface. Surfaces that need an oil primer are melamine, metal, plastic, all surfaces with oil paint, varnish, etc.

We recommend a good primer before applying Colorantic™ chalk paint. You’ll get better results if you follow these steps. On the other hand, if you don’t wish to use an undercoat, we recommend the application of our ultra-clear matte varnish following painting on such surfaces. This will extend the life of your furniture.
