Upgrade of Metal Lockers with Colorantic
There is nothing like a large metal piece of furniture to convey an industrial style in a room. Whether it is a school locker, a factory locker room or a wardrobe, this type of furniture with metal storage lockers makes all the difference and adds character to the home. Its vintage look helps energize the entire decor.
Slender, very high, but also very thin, metal locker cabinets allow you to optimize storage without taking up space. They adapt to all rooms of a house, from the entrance to the bedrooms, including the living room and the kitchen. This is exactly what we needed for the new entryway to our home.
Finding the piece of furniture wasn’t easy, but I finally found a triple metal locker that needed a lot of love before it could fit into our new entryway!
Products Used
- Tremclad® Anti-Rust Primer, Aerosol
- Sandpaper 120 and 180 grit
- Colorantic Oval Natural Bristle Brush 35 mm
- Colorantic Chalk Paint: Cotton Ball
- Colorantic Matte Top Coat Varnish
- TSP
Preparation
- My partner had to repair the door which was hanging and no longer had hinges.
- I cleaned the piece of furniture thoroughly since it had been sitting outside for a long time with its previous owner and was covered in a multitude of cobwebs. I also took care to rinse very well twice with hot water.
- With 120 grit paper, I sanded the entire piece of furniture and dusted it very well before continuing.
- I then applied a coat of anti-rust primer to properly prepare the surface for the Colorantic paint.
Here I am ready for the long-awaited moment, that of painting.
Painting
- Using my favourite brush, I applied two coats of Cotton Ball paint to get the most uniform colour possible. I waited 30 minutes between coats.
- Then I used a paint roller to apply a final coat since I wanted a very smooth surface.
- Using 180 grit paper, I sanded lightly between layers of paint, taking care to dust very well before continuing.
Finishing
- To finish, I sanded one last time and dusted it very well before applying a first coat of matte varnish.
- I repeated the previous step two more times since I wanted to make sure that the piece of furniture was very well protected and easy to clean given that it would be part of the entrance. With two young boys, who, let’s face it, they may not be as attentive as my husband and me when handling this new piece of furniture.
In short, after several hours of work, I arrived at the final result. I am very, very happy with the project, and this famous school locker that I have been looking for for a long time is clearly the star of our entrance!
You now know how to repurpose metal lockers in an industrial style room. School lockers or factory changing rooms, metal cabinets have preserved all their charm and style. You now have an idea to add character to your decor. It’s up to you to bring it into your interior and perfect your industrial style!
