How to create a chest with a wood effect

How to Paint an Old Chest to Create a Wood Effect

It is not necessarily the biggest projects that are highlighted in a room. Sometimes it’s the small transformations that steal the show. Small projects often have the biggest success.

In this blog, you will learn how to create a wood effect on a chest.

First, it is important to choose the style of furniture or object that we want to transform. Once you have selected the item, it is now time to choose the ideal colour for this project.

Looking at the thousand and one photos of upcycled furniture on the internet, you probably often have the impression that you have to make a big change to give it a new look. Think again, because often all it takes is a little touch to change the entire look. This is the case with this wooden chest that I painted white to create the desired look.

Think again, because often all it takes is a little touch to change the entire look. This is the case with this wooden chest that I painted white to create the desired look.

Preparation

Before starting my work, I took care to clean the chest well to remove all the dirt that has accumulated over time. I sprayed the cleaner and varnish remover on all surfaces and I left it to act for 30 minutes. Once the time was up, I rinsed it well with hot water twice to remove all residue.

An Easy Upgrade ✨

Before choosing the right colour for your project, ask yourself what the desired result is. You can get inspiration by looking at magazines or simply by doing research on the internet.

Secondly, analyze the current room by asking yourself what element enhances it. Sometimes it is better to focus on the small things, such as picture frames, flower pots, cushions, throws etc. Remember that a small project can become a big success. It’s all about simplicity!

There are so many different styles: boho, mid century, country, baroque, shabby chic, rustic, Victorian, contemporary and many others.

It’s not easy to choose! Are you like me? You can’t settle on just one choice because all the styles enchant you. Not knowing what style I really liked, I ended up having several mismatched pieces of furniture and I didn’t like it.

Finally, I decided to unify my living room and I chose to revamp this pretty chest which I found too overbearing. I wanted to lighten it to a pale shade while still retaining a wood look, because I love this material. The work was simple and quick, but the result is splendid. I used a wood grain tool sold in hardware stores and my colour choice was a white, Colorantic Cotton Ball.

The technique is quite simple, I applied the paint with a brush and then gently dragged the veining tool across the paint.
The tool is semi-circle and is made of textured curved lines. You must therefore pass this tool from bottom to top, taking care to slide it and ensuring that all parts of the semi-circle are in contact with the paint to give the effect of veining.

Finishing

I chose Colorantic’s matte varnish for protection. So I applied two coats using the Colorantic velvet finish foam roller.

In Conclusion

This old lifeless and dull wooden chest has been transformed into a beautiful living room table which will now match perfectly to the rest of the decor.

I will eventually paint the rest of my living room furniture with the magnificent white, Cotton Ball and the  beautiful gray, Tractor Dust to unify everything.

Next up will be my large sectional couch, I can’t wait!
