With my new career as a virtual assistant, the home office has become an important room in our home. My work area was carefully designed in the center of the ground floor of our ancestral home. Considering the amount of time spent in this room each day, I needed a space that gave me peace and quiet in order to properly carry out my tasks. Obviously, this space had to harmonize with the decoration of my home. In this article, you will learn how to upgrade a shelf with Colorantic products.
I hesitated a lot about the choice of colour to repaint some of the walls in this room. Having several original elements from the year the house was built, 1906, I opted for a blue that was part of the historic colour palette. Blue is a colour that inspires calm and lighter blues have positive associations with clear thoughts.
Having done some research, here is what I found regarding blue: Relaxation/appeasement/creativity. Blue has a relaxing power that soothes both the body and the mind. We suggest it to creative beings who need a calming environment to let their imagination run wild.
So blue was undoubtedly the perfect colour for my work environment. This is where the project began!
The Furnishings
While the room is painted and the work desk is in place, it is time to think about the storage unit. I did a lot of research on Marketplace and elsewhere to find the perfect piece of furniture to upgrade. Unfortunately I was unable to find the piece of furniture with the ideal dimensions to fit it into the space intended for it. So I opted for the “Kallax” storage modules from Ikea. Having several options, I chose white and closed boxes.
Being very organized in all areas of my life, I wanted a clean and very well organized work office in which I could work peacefully. So these modules suited me perfectly.
The more the project progressed, the more satisfied I was with the result.
The Story of the Shelf
One day my daughter asked me if I wanted a brown wooden shelf that I had given her a few years earlier. She thought about upgrading it, and ultimately with the renovations of their house, it no longer really had its place in their new layout. I was very hesitant about taking it back because I was wondering where to place it in the house. While waiting to be inspired, I placed it temporarily in a corner of my office.
One morning, while sipping my coffee, I was in awe of the work accomplished. Looking around my entire office, that’s when inspiration hit me. But why hadn’t I thought of that sooner? Without further ado, I was already at work transforming the famous austere brown shelf into a pretty decorative element for my work area.

Preparation
A good preparation will ensure work that will last over time.
- Spray Colorantic Cleaner and Varnish Remover over the entire surface. Leave it on for 30 minutes and once the time has elapsed, it is very important to rinse very well twice. To do this, use a bucket of water hot and a well-wrung cloth. It is important to change the water between rinses.
- Once the furniture is completely dry, you can apply the Colorantic oil primer coat. I highly recommend this step if the old finish is oil-based, as the oil-based primer will help transition from the oil-based finish to the new water-based chalk paint. This stage is important for long-lasting work.
Now that the furniture is well prepared, you can now move on to the fun part of the project, applying the paint.
Painting
- Using the 35mm and purple #6 brushes, apply a first coat of paint to all surfaces randomly.
- Since Colorantic Chalk Paint dries quickly, you can apply the second coat after 30 minutes.
Finishing
For the finish I chose Colorantic matte varnish and here is how I applied it.
- I added paint to the varnish: ¼ paint for ¾ varnish.
- Using the same brushes as for the painting and which I previously cleaned with the granular soap, I applied a first layer of this mixture, varnish/paint.
- I waited 1 hour before applying a second coat of varnish/paint.
A Rustic Touch
To give a little rustic touch, I lightly sanded a few places using the Colorantic sanding block.
A Work Area I am Proud of!
Now my work area is completely designed in my image… It is unique, well organized, calm, refined and bright thanks to the beautiful touches of pure white. Revamping a shelf with Colorantic products is so simple!
I wish you success in your projects and do not hesitate to let your imagination run wild!
