A Dresser that Adds Some Zest
Â
Add a touch of colour with our beautiful and delightful Lemon Pie paint.
Our blogger Kim rose to the challenge with great success. A few months ago, she revitalized a dresser perfect for a dining room.
Here are a few words from her:
The Lemon Pie and Cotton Ball colours, which remind me of the lightness of meringue, immediately appealed to me for this project. These soft shades are very refreshing.
The use of a stencil on the top and front of this dresser also adds a beautiful originality. What could be more appetizing for a dining room than these beautiful shades with a sweet taste?
As you read through the following below, you will find all the steps taken for this project, which is a true delight to the senses!
But just before that, you’ll find the list of products I used.
List of Products Used
- Colorantic Chalk Paints: Lemon Pie, Cotton Ball, and Tractor Dust
- Colorantic Varnish Cleaner and Remover
- Colorantic Natural Beeswax Wax
- Colorantic Oval Brush 35mm
- Colorantic Small Foam Stencil Pack
- Colorantic Round Wax Brush 16mm
- Colorantic Green Adhesive Tape
- Colorantic Decorative Stencils
- Colorantic Dual-Sided Sanding Block
- Two Clean and Soft Cloths
- Water
Preparation
- Spray the varnish cleaner and remover on all surfaces and let it sit for 30 minutes. Once the time is up, rinse thoroughly with a warm cloth.
- Lightly sand to scratch the surfaces, allowing the paint to adhere better. Since the furniture had a water-based finish, it was not necessary to apply an oil primer to transition between an old oil-based finish and the new Colorantic water-based paint.
Painting
- Next came the painting. To embellish your dresser, apply the Cotton Ball chalk paint on the door and front drawer as well as on the sides of the furniture.
- I thought a bit of colour would make the whole thing more cheerful, so I applied the Lemon Pie colour on the top of my dresser. Since the wood was bare and I wanted opacity, I applied two coats of this shade. The coverage of Colorantic chalk paint is remarkable, so one coat would have been enough, but I wanted the result to be optimal, that’s my little perfectionist side!
Staining
To add some relief to the ensemble, I made a water-based stain (see recipe below).
- To make your own homemade stain, mix one part Tractor Dust paint with three parts water. (So you can use this stain recipe with any Colorantic colour. Finally, for a more opaque result, add paint or to get a lighter result, add water to the mixture.
- I applied this stain with a dry brush, in the direction of the wood grain and from the edges of the furniture. Then, I wiped off the excess with a clean cloth. This effect aims to add some visual texture and give the impression of a time-worn piece of furniture.
Stencil Pattern
On the front of the door, I created a stencil pattern. The Colorantic online store offers a wide variety of stencils.
- For the pattern on the front door, I painted with the Lemon Pie colour.
- For the pattern on the top of the dresser, I painted with the Cotton Ball colour.
- Let it dry well before continuing.
Finishing
Finally, the final step! To protect your furniture and improve its durability, you can opt for wax or varnish. In this case, I used natural beeswax. It has a soft touch finish and the light glossy appearance complements the entire work wonderfully.
Remember, after applying wax to furniture, it is always best to wait at least seven days before using it. This is on average the time it takes for wax to completely harden.
And there you have it, the project is done. You are now ready to embark on this Colorantic project!
