How to paint cabinets

Transforming your vanity or cupboards is a smart solution. This is the ideal solution if you don’t mind the layout of your bathroom, but just want to give it a new look.

When you want to change the look of your bathroom, give it a modern touch or change the atmosphere completely, you immediately think of replacing the vanity and/or cabinets. Often imposing because of their color, some are slightly out of fashion. But when they’re in good condition, they’re real jewels and shouldn’t end up in a landfill.

Some good reasons to revamp a vanity or cupboards

  • More cost-effective than complete vanity replacement
  • More environmentally friendly than a complete bathroom renovation
  • The result is a long-lasting, professional-quality finish
  • You can change the color and style of the cabinets.
  • Work is faster than vanity replacement
  • Shorter lead times mean minimal disruption to your bathroom

Preparation

First of all, preparation is an essential step before painting your vanity. For satisfactory, long-lasting results, we advise you to read and follow these tips carefully.

  1. Whatever the finish, we recommend that you thoroughly clean the surfaces using Colorantic’s Varnish Cleaner and Remover. Spray on and leave for 30 minutes. Once the time has elapsed, be sure to rinse twice with a hot-water cloth.
  2. Once the vanity is dry, lightly sand the surfaces to remove scratches. This will help the paint adhere better.
  3. If the vanity has an old oil finish, we strongly recommend applying Colorantic’s oil primer. This will allow the transition from the old oil finish to the new water-based Colorantic chalk paint. For optimum, long-lasting results, we recommend you apply an oil primer, even if the old finish is acrylic.

The paint

We recommend at least two coats of Colorantic chalk paint.

  1. Apply a first coat and leave to dry for 30 minutes. Once the paint is dry, you can apply the second coat.
  2. Depending on the color chosen, a third coat of paint may be required.

The finish

  1. Since your vanity will require frequent cleaning, we recommend our clear varnish or glaze, Translucent Window as a finish, as these finishes will make cleaning easier.
  2. To apply varnish or glaze, we suggest our small, flat Snow White brush.
  3. We recommend that you allow the varnish or glaze to dry thoroughly for a few days before cleaning.
