How to Paint Fabric with Colorantic Chalk Paint | Step-by-Step Guide

Painting fabric may sound surprising, but with Colorantic chalk paint, it’s absolutely possible! Artisan Émilie Côté, from Rien ne se perd – Meubles revalorisés, had the opportunity to rescue and restore an abandoned sofa that was just waiting for a second life.In this article, she shares essential details, techniques, and expert tips on how to paint fabric using Colorantic products. If you’ve ever considered painting fabric, this inspiring project will pleasantly surprise you with its stunning results.

Choosing the Colour

For this transformation, Émilie chose Jardin d’été, a soft, light, and luminous green. It’s her favorite Colorantic chalk paint shade and a perfect choice for bringing freshness and elegance to fabric furniture.

Materials Needed to Paint Fabric with Colorantic Chalk Paint

• Sandblasting block
• Colorantic XL brush
• Glaze Translucent window
• Summer garden colour chalk paint
• Natural and tinted beeswax
• Wax brush 16mm
• Water-filled spray bottle
• Clean, damp white cloth (for wiping)

Preparing the fabric

Before painting fabric, proper preparation is essential. Using a spray bottle filled with water, lightly dampen the fabric to soften the fibers.

If the fabric is dirty, add a small amount of dish soap to the water, spray the surface, rinse, and gently wipe it down. All grease, residue, and dirt must be removed.

For leather furniture, Colorantic varnish cleaner and remover is an excellent option to ensure a deep clean.

Lightly moistening the fabric before applying Colorantic chalk paint improves adhesion and allows the paint to penetrate the fibers. Be careful not to over-wet the fabric, as this can dilute the color and cause bleeding.

Mixing products

When painting a sofa, it is recommended to use at least 58 oz of translucent window glaze and 32 oz of Colorantic chalk paint in your chosen color. Mix the products as follows:

• 1/3 translucent window glaze
  
• 1/3 Colorantic chalk paint

   

• 1/3 water

Regardless of quantity, the formula always remains the same: equal parts glaze, Colorantic chalk paint, and water.

Painting Fabric with Colorantic Chalk Paint: Applying the glaze-paint mixture

For this project, Émilie used the Colorantic XL brush. This round brush with natural silk bristles is ideal for covering large surfaces evenly.

Apply a thin, even coat of the glaze–paint–water mixture onto the fabric. Allow it to dry for 1 to 2 hours, or until completely dry to the touch. When weather permits, working outdoors can help reduce drying time.

For subsequent coats, repeat the mixture but slightly reduce the amount of water. Depending on the fabric type, you may need more glaze and Colorantic chalk paint. The required quantities can vary significantly from one fabric to another.

Between Coats

Between each coat, lightly sand the surface using a sanding block. You may also lightly mist the fabric with water between coats to maintain flexibility and smoothness.

If you are covering a dark color with a lighter one, 4 to 5 coats may be necessary. Conversely, transitioning from a light color to a darker one may require fewer coats. Typically, these steps are repeated 2 to 4 times, depending on the project.

It is strongly recommended to test the technique on the back of the sofa or chair first. This allows you to observe how the Colorantic chalk paint reacts with the fabric and make adjustments if needed.

Finishing with Beeswax

Once the final coat is fully dry, apply natural beeswax using a wax brush. A round XL natural-bristle brush or a 16 mm wax brush is ideal for evenly spreading the wax. Using a cloth is not recommended, as it absorbs too much wax and leads to product waste.

Lightly wipe the wax with a slightly damp white cotton cloth to help it penetrate the fabric. A white cotton T-shirt works perfectly and prevents streaks or marks.

Drying Time

Finally, allow the piece to dry for 1 to 7 days. Beeswax takes several days to fully cure, so patience is key when working on fabric projects with Colorantic chalk paint.
