Original Decor
Even before the start of the kitchen renovation, my mind was filled with ideas about the decor. For the space above the island, I dreamed of having shelves. Loving originality and upcycling, I had planned to revamp the old hutch from our dresser, but the installation of a retractable door weakened the wall, making it impossible to install the heavy hutch.
For a few months, I was on the lookout for the original element that would add a nice touch to this new, rather understated space. Digging through our treasure trove that my husband brilliantly decided to collect, I found an old window from our century-old house and added a shelf to it.

Window Design
First, I removed the old peeling paint using a stiff bristle brush.
I dusted it very well using the air compressor to remove the dirt accumulated in all the corners.
Once the masking tape was attached to the windows, I was ready to paint.
In a small amount of paint Cotton Ball, I added a little water in order to slightly lighten the paint. I always prefer to work in small quantities at a time so as not to waste paint.
Using the #10 oval brush, I applied the paint lightly and randomly to show off the grayish natural wood of the window.
As soon as the paint application was completed, using a damp cloth I wiped in certain areas until the desired effect was obtained.
Once the paint was completely dry, I sanded lightly with the two-grain sanding block to accentuate the wear in the desired areas.
Too much wear…no problem, everything can be corrected by adding paint.
Painting The Shelf
My husband helped me with the tablet. Not wanting to weigh down the window, he opted for basswood, which is a very light wood and works well.
It was by using different tools that he managed to give it the appearance of aged wood.
Before painting the board, I gently brushed the wood using a steel brush. I sprayed a little water in certain places to bring out the grain of the wood, in order to accentuate the aged effect.
To achieve the natural grayish colour of the window, I applied one coat Tractor Dust, over the entire board using the #10 oval brush.
Then, before the paint is dried completely, I sprayed a little water and immediately applied the colour cotton Ball, making sure to mix the two colors well using my brush.
Once this step was completed, I used a damp cloth and wiped it in a few places to bring out the gray.
Stencil
On the back of the window I fixed the stencil very well using masking tape and from a distance of about 12 inches I sprayed the black spray paint, taking care to spray lightly to avoid sliding .
Protection
Using the XL round wax brush, I applied the natural beeswax to all surfaces, one section at a time, buffing it using a cloth (t-shirt)
Always looking for originality, we opted for planter hooks to support the shelf.
I’m really really delighted with my man’s brilliant idea. It’s a beautiful focal point that I’ve been dreaming of for a wow factor in my kitchen.
I love decorating it according to the seasons, its look is always appreciated by our guests.
The perfect duo to update your decor!
