What is Colorantic Chalk Paint?

Colorantic chalk-based paint is nothing but authentic chalk paint. Colorantic is the only Quebec/Canadian company proud to call its paint true chalk paint! Compared to its competitors that use lime, clay, or milk in their recipes, Colorantic uses real liquid chalk.

Colorantic paint is easy to use and versatile. It can be used for various projects and is also a real trend! Take a look at Pinterest, and you’ll see that chalk-painted furniture is currently very popular. Fans of matte and crackled finishes are delighted with Colorantic paint.

Our chalk paint is not only intended for furniture but also for decorative items such as trays and mirrors, as well as wall art. It’s very easy to use and allows you to achieve a good result even if you are a beginner. If you want to learn how to achieve these amazing effects yourself, keep reading to discover the basics and fundamental principles of chalk paint.

Bénédicte Girard, blogger and ambassador of Colorantic, shares her first DIY furniture makeover project with Colorantic chalk paint. In addition to painting with our chalk-based paint, she managed to create a stunning effect by adding fabric to the dresser doors.

Here is the list of Colorantic products she used for this project:

The Steps

Preparation

  • Firstly, if your furniture is raw wood like this one (a new pine piece), then no special preparation is needed. Just make sure to dust it well before proceeding.
  • However, if your furniture has an old varnish or oil paint, Bénédicte recommends applying Colorantic’s oil primer. The oil primer allows you to transition between an old oil finish and Colorantic’s new water-based paint.
  • She also recommends applying an oil primer when painting melamine, metal, or plastic.

Painting

You are now ready to paint. Like Bénédicte, use one of Colorantic’s brushes or a velvet-finished foam roller.

For the top of the furniture, Bénédicte chose the metallic colour, Champagne. She applied two coats of this beautiful paint using a velvet-finished foam roller from Colorantic.

Now that the top is finished, Bénédicte continued the transformation of the furniture. She had to apply two coats of Grapefruit paint since she had not applied oil primer and the raw wood absorbs a lot of paint. However, for a less absorbent surface, a single coat may suffice since Colorantic chalk-based paint provides excellent coverage.

Subsequently, Bénédicte mixed the pure white Cotton Ball and Grapefruit to create a shaded technique.

Finishing

Even though Colorantic chalk-based paint dries very quickly (around 30 minutes), Bénédicte preferred to wait an hour before proceeding with the finish.

Using the 16mm round brush, she applied wax to the entire piece of furniture.

Finally, with the explanations provided above by Bénédicte and by watching her video on our website: colorantic.com, in the videos/tutorials section, you too can create a beautiful transformation of an ordinary piece of furniture.
