Finishing Products

Many of you have sent us questions about choosing a finish. Here is a short guide to choosing the right product for your project.

We have three finishing products:

    finishing

    Canadian Waxes

Our waxes are available in six shades:

Available in 2, 4 and 8 oz sizes. Colorantic waxes are made with beeswax and natural oil. Beeswax is passed through a sieve to make it clear, so it won’t yellow light-coloured furniture and accessories.

Our beeswax is 100% natural. You can use it safely on all objects that will be in contact with food, since it is approved as food grade by Health Canada. It can therefore be used safely on butcher blocks, chopping boards, wooden fruit bowls, and more.

    Wax Uses

    Surface Protectant

Our waxes are designed to protect paint.

Natural beeswax gives a slightly satiny effect. It’s very important that the wax is the last product to be applied to your project, because if you apply paint, varnish or glaze over the wax, it will prevent it from adhering properly.

    Create a Faux Finish

Waxes containing pigments allow you to give your furniture a unique shine! You can achieve a cloudy, whitewashed effect and a shabby-chic look with our White Snow wax. For a weathered look, use Antique Brown or Charcoal Black, and for a faded, barnwood look, use Grey Storm.

    Colorantic Glazes

    Colorantic offers four glaze options:

    Available in 4, 8, 16, 32, 58 and 128 oz (gallon) sizes.

    glaze

    What is a glaze?

The ancestor of varnish, glaze has long been the finishing product of painters and cabinetmakers.

It takes longer to dry than water-based varnish. Approx. 1 to 2 h for drying and up to 48 h for curing.

    Colouring

Our coloured glazes are ready to use.

Did you know that by mixing our clear glaze, Fenêtre Translucide and one of our chalk-based paints of your choice, you can create a customized stain?

You can mix 1/4 paint to 3/4 clear glaze. You can add color if you want a more opaque finish.

    Fabric paint

Glazes can also be used on fabric. Simply mix one part water, one part clear glaze and one part paint. To find out more about how to paint fabric, check out our blogs on the subject.

    Paint Protectant

Glaze serves the same purpose as our varnish. It has a satin finish with approximately 30-35% gloss. You can use it for all your projects. It is resistant to heat and humidity (e.g. bathroom, kitchen).

    Colorantic Varnishes

100% made in Canada, our matte varnish won’t turn pale paint shades yellow! It is ideal for heavy-duty furniture such as tables, chairs, kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

Like our glaze, it is resistant to heat and humidity.

You can now choose your finishing product according to the type of project you wish to undertake. You can also refer to our capsule on the choice of finish.
