We Love Colorantic Products!

I love Colorantic! There’s a wide variety of products to choose from when it’s time to refurbish a piece of furniture or object! I was really surprised to learn that Colorantic is the only chalk-based paint company that uses real liquid chalk in its recipe, which sets it apart from its competitors.

Personally, I have known for several years that I would be using Colorantic products for my future business, Atelier87

For several years I have been browsing their website and various Facebook groups to discover new products.

I loved looking at the photos and the new shades!

When I first decided to buy the paint, I went to the store to ask for advice on how to use the products. When I arrived home, I immediately started experimenting with these new products, paints and waxes.

Where to start?

I can’t get enough of the wax! The effect it creates is truly impressive!

It can really create any style. Personally, I like to give furniture an antique look, because that way it ages beautifully.

It isn’t just the wax that I love! The paint dries in no time at all, which allows me to work quickly, but it also applies easily when using stencils, unlike many other brands of paint. There’s a wide range of pre-mixed colors, and you don’t find your favourite among their selection, Colorantic offers bases that we can have tinted with all paint manufacturers’ colour codes. It’s really wonderful, and Colorantic is the only company to offer us this opportunity.

A very important point for me is the low level of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). The fewer the better for our health and that of the planet!

To continue with the products I like, I will move onto the top coat. I think it’s excellent because it’s very matte, which makes it easy to apply, but also gives a real antique look.

I could go on and on about my favourites. There are so many: cleaner and varnish remover, brushes, glazes…Oh the glazes! You can create so many beautiful projects with these, not to mention the primers, they really grab on to everything, to name but a few.

What I like most of all is the ease of communication with the staff. I order online now, which I have never done in the past. I was really impressed by the speed of delivery (24h on working days), WOW! What’s more, I can get advice quickly by e-mail, phone or Facebook. Their customer service is second to none, and they’re an amazing team, with a fire designer! They are always smiling and are available to answer any questions I may have.

For all these reasons, I am happy to have painted my table with Colorantic products.

Steps

I cleaned my table using the Cleaner and Varnish Remover, let it sit for 20 minutes and rinsed very well twice.
I sanded the entire surface (paper # 150)
I applied the crackling medium found in big-box stores.

How Cracking Medium Works

Do you know how cracking medium works? Apply the medium with a brush in the direction you want the crackled pattern to appear. In other words, for linear cracking, it is always applied in the same direction, either vertically or horizontally. For a random crackle, apply horizontally and vertically.

A little tip: the more medium you put on your brush, the greater the crackle effect.

Once everything is completely dry…and I say completely dry, because I’ve tried it with a medium that’s still wet and it doesn’t work. Once dry, the paint can be applied. For this project I used the colour Volcano, a soothing light gray. I will say that this stage is fairly simple.

The paint must be applied quickly, without back and forth movements and in the right quantity. If this is not the case, there may be major variations in the cracking. It is best not to go over the paint a second time, as it will be very sticky.

You shouldn’t be afraid to take on this project, because contrary to what we may think, the more imperfect the furniture, the more beautiful it is.

Bringing out the imperfections in our work is an art, and lends a certain charm.

Tips for the Crackle Effect

The background colour will be the colour visible under the cracks.
For the second, top colour, a single coat will suffice.

You must follow the steps in this order:

Background colour
Cracking medium
Main colour

Personally, I didn’t apply a background color because I wanted to see the table’s original wood.

Then…

To further antique my table base, I applied Black Coal wax, which adds a special touch. The wax gives a wow factor that makes the whole piece truly unique. I applied it with the 16mm wax brush. I heated the wax in the lid of the container and applied the desired amount.

To facilitate the application of dark wax, it is best to apply the Natural Wax beforehand, as this allows the dark wax to glide easier on application, and also facilitates corrections if necessary. Using a paper towel, you apply a little natural wax to the dark wax you’ve over-applied, wipe it off and you aree done.

It was very easy to antique this table using Black Coal wax.

For the tabletop, I used a stain/varnish I had in my garage and applied it with a sponge.
